Two wheeler retail sales grew strongly in September 2026 with improved demand from rural areas
Two-wheeler retail sales reported strong growth in September 2026, with total registrations reaching 17,90,188 units, representing a 33.08% year-on-year (YoY) increase over 13,45,153 units sold in September 2025. Sales also grew 4.41% month-on-month (MoM) from 17,14,610 units registered in August 2026. The segment recorded its best-ever September performance.
Fuel Wise 2W Retail Sales September 2026
Urban retail sales improved by 5.29%, while rural sales increased by 3.62%, with demand gaining momentum ahead of the festive season. Petrol-powered two-wheelers continued to dominate the market with an 88.35% share, while electric two-wheelers and CNG/LPG models accounted for 11.58% and 0.07%, respectively.
The two-wheeler segment also registered a 20.43% growth on a year-to-date (YTD) basis, with 1,10,43,407 units sold during the YTD FY27 period, compared with 91,69,815 units during the corresponding period of the previous year.
2W Retail Sales September 2026
Honda retained its No. 1 position with 4,69,789 unit sales in the past month. It also saw its market share improve to 26.19% from 25.24% held in the same month of the past year. The two wheeler major edged out Hero MotoCorp which recorded 4,34,442 retail unit and saw its market share declined to 24.26% from 24.57% on YoY basis.
TVS Motor has posted stronger YoY percentage growth as compared to two leading rivals. Sales increased to 3,64,640 units in the past month, up from 2,56,042 unit sales of Sept 2025. Market share last month improved strongly to 20.37% from 19.03% of the same month last year. Combined retail sales of Honda, Hero and TVS accounted for more than 70% of two-wheeler retail market during the month of September 2026.
Bajaj Auto sales too surged to 1,66,112 units from 1,44,214 units though the company suffered a setback in terms of market share. Market share fell to 9.28% from 10.72% YoY. Royal Enfield too saw a dip in market share to 5.71% with 1,02,226 unit sales, up from 83,494 units.
Suzuki two wheeler sales increased to 1,01,926 units, a growth over 82,443 unit retail sales in the same month of the past year. India Yamaha Motor sales also improved strongly to 64,292 units from 49,614 units, though market share suffered a marginal decline.
2W Electric Retail Sales September 2026
With renewed demand across the electric two wheeler segment, Ather Energy sales surged to 30,533 units, up from 19,620 units to command a 1.71% share. Ola Electric continued to report YoY decline in retail sales with numbers falling to 13,451 units in the past month from 13,862 unit sales of Sept 2025.
Greaves Ampere sales more than doubled at 9,316 units in Sept 2026 from 4,352 units of the same month last year taking up market share to 0.52%. Retail sales of River Mobility too grew substantially to 5,556 units, up from 1,895 units YoY while BGauss sales went up to 5,023 units from 2,524 units on a YoY basis. Bounce Electric retail sales grew to 3,069 units from 895 units YoY and E-Sprinto sales improved to 1,997 units from 957 units YoY.
Sales also increased for Classic Legends (Jawa / Yezdi / BSA) with 4,573 unit sales, up from 3,192 units. Piaggio has reported stronger sales at 3,778 units in the past month, whereas sales had stood at 2,752 units in the same month last year. Other two-wheeler manufacturers, including several electric vehicle makers, contributed 10,627 units to overall retail sales in September 2026, compared with 9,261 units in the same month last year.
