Electric car sales continued their strong growth in September 2026, with total registrations reaching 36,108 units. This represented a 17.63% month-on-month (MoM) increase over the 30,696 units sold in August 2026. On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, sales nearly doubled, rising 94.56% from the 18,559 units recorded in September 2025.

Tata Motors retained the top position in India’s electric passenger vehicle market, supported by its broad EV portfolio. The automaker sold 14,791 units in September 2026, registering a 100.72% YoY increase over the 7,369 units sold in September 2025. Sales also grew 12.41% MoM, compared with 13,158 units in August 2026.

Fuel wise retail sales Sep 2026

Mahindra secured second place with 7,780 units sold last month. This represented a 95.82% YoY increase over the 3,973 units sold in September 2025. MoM sales also increased by 20.36%, compared with 6,464 units in August 2026. JSW MG Motor ranked third with 5,254 registrations. Sales increased 9.14% YoY, up from 4,803 units in September 2025. On a MoM basis, sales rose 13.41% from the 4,622 units registered in August 2026.

Vinfast, Kia Post Growth, Maruti Sales Decline

VinFast occupied the fourth position, recording 2,964 units in September 2026. This represented a massive 49,300% YoY increase, compared with just 6 units in September 2025. MoM sales also increased 34.79%, up from 2,199 units in August 2026.

Kia India followed with 1,262 units. Sales surged 111.04% YoY from 598 units in September 2025, while MoM sales increased 95.66% from 645 units in August 2026. Maruti Suzuki, India’s leading passenger vehicle manufacturers in the ICE segment, is still a relatively new entrant in the electric car market. Its EV sales declined to 1,104 units in September 2026, representing a 21.81% MoM decline from the 1,412 units sold in August.

BYD recorded 836 units in September, with sales rising 35.93% YoY and 53.96% MoM. The company has also announced plans to introduce its luxury Denza brand in India.

Hyundai Records YoY Growth, BMW Sees Strong MoM Gains

Hyundai Motor India recorded 792 electric car sales in September 2026, marking a 52.02% YoY increase from 521 units in September 2025. However, sales declined marginally by 1.37% MoM, compared with 803 units in August 2026. Hyundai is getting ready to launch all new sub 4m electric SUV in coming months.

In the luxury EV segment, BMW India recorded 502 units, with sales increasing 36.04% YoY and 83.21% MoM. Tesla India continued to record strong growth, with sales reaching 291 units in September 2026. This represented a 321.74% YoY increase over the 69 units sold in September 2025. MoM sales also jumped 150.86%, compared with 116 units in August 2026. Mercedes Benz AG with 125 units sold last month has seen sales decline by 8.76% on a YoY basis while sales went up 9.65% MoM.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor sales went up to 218 units last month, a 35.40% MoM growth from 161 units. Citroen recorded 55 unit sales while Volvo India sales stood at 45 units with both automakers showing off healthy YoY and MoM growth. Other electric vehicle manufacturers collectively contributed 101 units to total retail sales in September. This represented a 6.48% MoM decline, although sales were still up a substantial 260.71% YoY.
