If you own an R15, you probably know the feeling. Great bike, but on the highway it just runs out of steam a bit. And the next option, the R3, costs a lot more. There’s been nothing in between for a long time.

Looks like that’s about to change. Yamaha is bringing the YZF-R2.

When’s It Launching

August 27, 2026 is the date going around right now. Yamaha has sent media invites for that day, and they’ve already trademarked the “YZF-R2” name in India. That usually means something is close.

Some reports say September or October instead. So it might shift a bit. But August 27 is what most people are expecting.

Price

Nothing official yet. Most guesses are around ₹2.10 lakh to ₹2.40 lakh, ex-showroom. A few say it could go up to ₹2.60 lakh.

Basically it’ll cost more than a top R15, less than an R3.

Specs (expected)

  • Engine around 200cc, up from 155cc on the R15
  • Power around 24-25 bhp, R15 makes 18.4 bhp
  • Torque around 18.5-20 Nm
  • 6-speed gearbox, maybe with quickshifter
  • Upside-down front forks like the R15 V4

So basically an R15 with a bit more power and comfort for longer rides.

Design

Probably looks a lot like the R15. Sharp headlight, same kind of tank, sporty look. Yamaha usually doesn’t change this stuff much between models, and honestly it works fine.

There’s also talk of a Monster Energy MotoGP edition coming later.

Rivals

  • KTM RC 200 — main rival
  • Bajaj Pulsar RS200
  • Suzuki Gixxer SF 250
  • KTM 250 Duke
  • Honda CBR300R (also expected around this time)

RC 200 hasn’t had real competition in a while. This could change that.

Why It Matters

Yamaha’s lineup had this weird gap, R15 then straight to R3. Nothing in between. The R2 fills that. Good option for people who want more than R15 but don’t want to spend R3 money.

Bottom Line

Nothing confirmed by Yamaha yet. But between the trademark, the invites, and multiple sources saying the same thing, it feels close to official.

Will update this once it’s confirmed.
