BMW’s new-generation sedan combines Neue Klasse styling with electric and petrol powertrains, while a plug-in hybrid will follow in 2027
BMW has unveiled the new-generation 3 Series, introducing a fully electric i3 alongside petrol-powered versions. The reveal marks a major evolution for the sedan, with a new design language, a substantially revised cabin and an expanded choice of powertrains.
The electric lineup opens with the i3 40 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive, the latter offering a claimed WLTP range of up to 912 km. Petrol buyers will have four-cylinder options and a new six-cylinder M350 xDrive flagship. A plug-in hybrid will join the range in 2027.
Neue Klasse Design Across The Range
The new 3 Series adopts BMW’s Neue Klasse design language, with electric and combustion-engine versions sharing a closely related appearance. Differences are largely concentrated in details reflecting their respective powertrains.
BMW describes the silhouette as a “2.5-box” design, combining a longer wheelbase, short overhangs and a set-back glasshouse. Flared wheel arches and flush-fitting door handles add to the new look.
At the front, the kidney grille and twin headlights form a single visual unit. The rear receives horizontally arranged lighting, while M Performance versions introduce distinctive yellow lighting elements. Wheel options range from 19 to 21 inches for the electric i3 and 18 to 20 inches for combustion-engine models. M Sport and M Sport Pro packages will also be offered.
Electric BMW i3 – Up To 912 Km Range
The i3 uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, incorporating cylindrical battery cells, an 800V architecture and bidirectional charging. Both launch versions feature dual motors and all-wheel drive.
The i3 50 xDrive supports DC charging at up to 400 kW. Under specified high-power charging conditions, BMW claims it can add up to 423 km of WLTP range in ten minutes. Actual range and charging performance will vary with operating conditions. A more powerful i3 M60 xDrive is scheduled to join the lineup in 2027.
M350 xDrive Keeps Six-Cylinder Petrol Power
The petrol lineup includes the 330 and 330 xDrive, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 255 hp and 400 Nm in US specification. Above them sits the M350 xDrive, with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six and 48V mild-hybrid technology, delivering approximately 437 hp and 580 Nm, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in 4.1 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
Adaptive M suspension is standard. A new “Drift Moment” function allows power to be directed exclusively to the rear wheels, adding another performance-focused feature. Two four-cylinder petrol variants will also be available when the combustion-engine range launches.
New Cabin With 17.9-Inch Display
Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive combines Panoramic Vision, a 17.9-inch driver-oriented central display, a multifunction steering wheel and an optional 3D head-up display. BMW Operating System X supports software updates and expanded digital services.
Integration of Amazon Alexa+ technology will enhance voice interaction, with availability depending on the market. Equipment includes electrically adjustable front seats with memory, while options cover M Sport seats, rear-seat heating and upgraded Harman Kardon audio systems.
Driver Assistance And Production Plans
BMW will offer Level 2 ADAS assistance systems, including a Motorway Assistant supporting hands-free driving at up to 130 km/h in designated markets, with continued driver supervision. Further navigation-guided urban assistance functions are planned from 2027.
The electric i3 will be manufactured in Munich, while combustion-engine versions will be produced in Dingolfing. India launch timing, prices and variant details remain unannounced; the specifications and equipment outlined in the reveal apply to the German market.
