The upcoming Fortuner will reportedly retain its existing platform and basic bodyshell, with substantial changes to styling, interiors and technology
Toyota’s new gen Fortuner will make its global debut on December 1, 2026, confirms Toyota South Africa via a report in Car Mag. The SUV is expected to reach India in 2027, after Toyota Kirloskar Motor launches the facelifted Innova Hycross sometime in Dec this year.
New Fortuner has been spied in Thailand, including the recent highway images that offered a clearer view of the front and side profile. While earlier coverage referred to the upcoming SUV as a new-generation model, Financial Express sources indicate it will instead be a substantial update built around the existing architecture.
Existing Platform, Substantial Redesign
New Fortuner will retain its IMV ladder-frame platform and basic bodyshell. Multiple sheet-metal changes are nevertheless expected, allowing Toyota to refresh its appearance while preserving the upright proportions associated with the SUV.
This approach would follow the latest Hilux, combining a substantial visual and cabin overhaul with familiar underpinnings. The extent of the changes means the updated Fortuner could look noticeably different even without moving to an entirely new platform.
Spy Shots Offer Clues To New Styling
Spy shots of new Fortuner show an upright grille and prominent vertical elements around the front fascia. Slim upper lighting sections, a tall bonnet, pronounced wheel arches and side steps were also visible. However, the camouflage continues to conceal the final bumper detailing and the precise shape of the lighting assemblies.
At the rear, is a redesigned tailgate and a connected LED light bar, along with revised tail-lamp graphics. Spy shots exposed portions of the outer lamps, but the complete lighting arrangement remains hidden.
Hilux-Inspired Cabin And More Technology Expected
A substantial cabin update could be one of the biggest changes for Fortuner buyers. The interior will draw heavily from the latest Hilux, with a larger central touchscreen, wireless connectivity, a fully digital instrument cluster and improvements to dashboard materials and ergonomics.
These additions would modernise the cabin as newer rivals place greater emphasis on displays, connectivity and convenience features. An expanded Toyota Safety Sense package is also expected, at least on higher variants. Potential ADAS features include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assist.
2.8-Litre Diesel Expected To Continue
The familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine is expected to remain part of the lineup, with manual and automatic transmission options. There is also a possibility of Toyota reintroducing a 2.7-litre petrol option.
Fortuner continues to deliver substantial volumes in India. It recorded 3,185 units in September 2026, growing 14.44% year-on-year. Its July–September tally reached 9,878 units, up 15.88%, showing that demand remains strong ahead of the update.
Competition is expanding, however. Kia Sorento registered 1,739 units in September, adding another option for buyers considering a premium SUV. Models such as Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron also compete for buyers in the broader price bracket, despite differences in construction and positioning. The upcoming update gives Toyota an opportunity to retain Fortuner’s familiar strengths while addressing expectations for a more modern cabin and additional technology.
