Volume-oriented offerings such as the VF5 can help strengthen presence in India’s fast-growing EV segment
Vinfast is evaluating new products for the Indian market, one of which is the VF5 electric SUV. Test mules of the VF5 facelift have been spotted multiple times this year. Vinfast has now filed a design patent for VF5 in India. This is the facelift version of the VF5, which has been spotted overseas as well.
Vinfast VF5 facelift – What’s new?
A refreshed front fascia is noticeable with sharper lines and a more upright stance. The closed-off grille spans the entire width seamlessly, hinting at a more contemporary design approach. Lighting elements are entirely new and follow a more precise geometric construction. These are mounted lower, flanking the bumper section.
A lower grille with slatted elements and a sleek bumper design are noticeable. The signature V-shaped trim lining the bonnet seems familiar, although there could be some tweaks for a more refined appearance. Higher trims could even get illumination on the V-shaped element, something that aligns with contemporary automotive design trends.
Side profile of Vinfast VF5 appears largely the same as the current model. There are only a few differences such as a new design for the alloy wheels. Some new colours are possible, but not confirmed. Key features of the existing model sold overseas include circular wheel arches, door side moulding, dual tone ORVMs, blacked out pillars and body coloured door handles.
At the rear, Vinfast VF5 has a full-width lighting setup, integrating the tail lamps, turn indicators and a sleek LED light bar. This ensures a much cleaner aesthetic in comparison to the bumper-mounted lighting elements seen with the current model. ‘VINFAST’ lettering has been added, complementing the V-shaped trim on the boot lid. The rear bumper now has a rather plain design compared to the layered unit on the current model.
Interior updates
Test mules of Vinfast VF5 facelift spotted overseas have revealed the presence of a larger free-standing touchscreen infotainment system. The dashboard is now more upright and a redesigned 2-spoke yoke-style steering wheel has been used. VF5 facelift could do away with the traditional instrument console, shifting its functions to the infotainment screen.
Centre console has also been updated, featuring a more modern design approach. Other key features revealed earlier include cupholders and a rotary drive selector dial. VF5 facelift’s cabin appears largely black, although there could be a subtle dual-tone theme of black and dark grey. The new version appears to be using leatherette upholstery, an upgrade over the fabric seats offered with the current model.
Performance, range
It is not known if there are any changes in performance and specifications of Vinfast VF5 facelift. These numbers can vary depending on the market. For context, VF5 in Indonesia is equipped with a 29.6 kWh battery pack. A front mounted electric motor has been used (FWD configuration), generating 90 hp and 135 Nm.
Certified range is 268 km, as per NEDC standards. In other markets, VF5 uses a 37.23 kWh battery pack. Output is 136 hp and 135 Nm, and the certified range is 326 km. The configuration to be offered in India has not been revealed. Vinfast VF5 facelift could be launched in India at a starting price of around Rs 12 lakh. Depending on its configuration, it will compete with rivals such as Tata Nexon EV, Punch EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV.
