Tesla opens Roadster reservations in India, with further payments due within 10 days; production will begin in 2028 with left-hand-drive vehicles only
For anyone who grew up imagining flying cars, Tesla’s Roadster reveal offered a moment to pause and stare. Watching a car lift off on stage brought a familiar science-fiction dream a little closer to reality. Now, Indian buyers can reserve the machine behind that spectacle — though the financial commitment is substantial.
Tesla Roadster India Reservation Amounts
Tesla has opened Roadster bookings in India, with total reservation payments reaching Rs 2.50 crore for the Thrust configuration. This is a booking amount, not the final purchase price, and an India delivery date has yet to be confirmed.
For the Roadster Performance, customers need to pay Rs 5.01 lakh initially, followed by Rs 45.05 lakh within 10 days. This takes the total reservation payment to Rs 50.06 lakh.
Selecting the Thrust configuration substantially increases the amount payable. The initial payment remains Rs 5.01 lakh, but a further Rs 2,45,24,000 is due within 10 days. Together, these payments amount to Rs 2,50,25,000, (Rs 2.50 crore).
Thrust availability is limited to one order per customer. Tesla also states that availability is subject to local laws and regulatory requirements. This means the Thrust configuration or its thruster functionality may not be offered in markets where it is not permitted.
These are reservation payments displayed on Tesla’s India website, rather than announced ex-showroom prices. Tesla labels the initial Rs 5.01 lakh payment as fully refundable. The page also states that reservations are not final until payment is received and may be cancelled if payment is not completed within 10 days. Tesla says production will begin in 2028 with left-hand-drive vehicles only, with no right-hand-drive production timeline announced.
Performance, Thrust And Rocket Configurations
The Roadster Performance seats two and features active aerodynamics along with a multi-mode suction system. The latter is designed to generate additional downforce, helping the tyres maintain grip.
Thrust builds on that package with acceleration thrusters. Tesla describes this two-seat configuration as race-ready, with limited availability. Rocket takes the concept further, with seating for one and what Tesla describes as a full flight system. It is listed as invite-only, with no reservation amount shown in the supplied India booking page.
The Roadster’s design draws inspiration from the SR-71 and F-35 aircraft. Tesla says the vehicle incorporates SpaceX components, extending the aerospace influence beyond its low-slung bodywork and cockpit-style cabin.
Production In 2028 – Left-Hand Drive Only Initially
An important detail for Indian customers is Tesla’s production plan. The company says Roadster production will begin in 2028 with left-hand-drive vehicles only. While reservations are now open in India, the announcement does not provide an India delivery schedule or confirm when a right-hand-drive version might enter production.
The opening of the reservation window therefore precedes clarity on the final India-spec offering and delivery arrangements. Final Indian pricing, applicable specifications and the availability of the different configurations remain details to watch as the Roadster moves towards production.
Complimentary Acceleration Boost For Model Y L
Alongside opening Roadster reservations, Tesla India has announced complimentary Acceleration Boost for its six-seater Model Y L. With the upgrade, Tesla claims a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 4.5 seconds. The electric SUV also offers a claimed range of up to 681 km on the WLTP cycle.
