Royal Enfield has launched Himalayan 440 in India at Rs 2.29 lakh, ex-showroom. The motorcycle marks ten years of Himalayan and brings back the simpler adventure-tourer formula associated with the original Himalayan 411. Bookings for Himalayan 440 are now open. It will be sold alongside the newer Himalayan 450 rather than replacing it.
443cc Engine, 6-Speed Gearbox
At the heart of Himalayan 440 is a new 443cc single-cylinder, long-stroke engine producing 25.4 bhp at 6,250 rpm and 34 Nm at 4,000 rpm. It is paired with a new six-speed gearbox with revised ratios. Royal Enfield says the lower ratios are intended to make low-speed riding easier, while the addition of a sixth gear should allow more relaxed highway cruising.
Underneath, Himalayan 440 uses an upgraded half-duplex split-cradle frame. Suspension comprises 41mm telescopic forks offering 200mm travel and a linkage-type rear monoshock with 180mm wheel travel. NVH levels have also been improved.
It continues with the adventure-focused 21-inch front and 17-inch rear spoke-wheel combination. Ground clearance stands at 220mm, while the seat height is a relatively accessible 800mm. Fuel tank capacity is 15 litres. Braking hardware includes a 300mm front disc with a two-piston floating caliper and a 240mm rear disc. Dual-channel ABS is offered with switchable functionality for riding on loose surfaces.
Instrument Cluster Draws Attention
One aspect of Himalayan 440 that had already generated considerable discussion before launch was its instrument console. Images of the motorcycle had surfaced on social media earlier this week, revealing that the distinctive multi-pod dashboard of the original Himalayan 411 would not make a comeback.
Royal Enfield has equipped Himalayan 440 with a digital-analogue instrument cluster. It comes with Tripper navigation and USB Type-C charging. While the new arrangement brings additional functionality, the reaction suggests the original Himalayan’s unusual cockpit remains an important part of the motorcycle’s appeal for some enthusiasts.
Three Colours, Anniversary Edition Badge
Himalayan 440 is available in Sela Black, Mustang Brown and Nelong White. Initial production units will also feature an exclusive ten-year anniversary badge on the fuel tank. Royal Enfield is offering a range of accessories including hard panniers, top boxes, touring seats, adventure handguards, engine guards and protection accessories.
The Himalayan nameplate has now completed a decade in the market. Across the original Himalayan and the current Himalayan 450 introduced in 2023, Royal Enfield says more than 3.2 lakh units have been sold globally.
