Kia has a sales target of 4.10 lakh units per year by 2030, with the Sonet set to play a key role
Kia is working on the new-gen Sonet (codenamed QY2E), which is expected to be introduced in 2027. Major updates have been incorporated, including a new platform, enhanced safety, sportier styling and a hybrid option. New-gen Sonet has already been spied in India. Now it has been spied in South Korea, revealing the side and rear profiles and part of the cabin.
2nd-gen Sonet – Design updates
Kia Sonet is following the brand’s latest ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy. It blends sharp, technical, geometric shapes with clean, smooth, organic forms. Side profile reveals angular window frames and a gently sloped roofline.
Also, a revised C-pillar design, new sharper dual-tone ORVMs and squared wheel arches. The alloy wheels have a sportier design and could be 17-inch or 18-inch, depending on the variant. Finer details are not visible due to the heavy camouflage.
At the rear, new Sonet appears to have a refreshed tail lamp design. These new tail lamps are likely to feature an interconnected setup with a sharper design than that of the current model. Revisions are expected across the boot lid and rear bumper as well, in line with the new model’s sharper overall design.
At the front, new Sonet is expected to get a completely redesigned front fascia. It could have a taller, squarer front grille paired with vertical LED headlight clusters and distinctive Star Map LED DRL running strips.
New-gen Sonet’s exterior design will be similar to that of Kia’s newer models, such as the EV3, EV9 and the new Seltos. Some new, striking colour options are likely for the new Sonet.
Interior refresh, new tech features
New Sonet could get a curved panoramic display, comprising two high-definition 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment and instrument console. The current model has dual screens, but these are flat and not a seamless unit. New Sonet could get a sleek two-spoke or double-D-cut multi-function steering wheel. And a redesigned HVAC control bar that toggles dynamically between audio and climate controls.
As Kia steps up focus on using sustainable materials, new Sonet could get bio-PU leatherette options and recycled fabrics. The dual-tone interior theme could be refreshed.
Equipment upgrades could include features like dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a more advanced audio system and 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory. The current model already has premium features such as front ventilated seats, Bose audio system, smart air purifier and LED ambient sound mood lights.
Safety could be upgraded with full Level 2 ADAS. The current model has ADAS Level 1 with 10 autonomous safety features. Standard safety kit includes 6 airbags, electronic stability control, hill assist control, vehicle stability management, blind view monitor, front and rear parking sensors, all wheel disc brakes and a 360 degree camera. Safety will also be enhanced with Sonet’s transition to Kia’s newer K1 platform.
Hybrid option
New Sonet will continue with the existing engine options at the time of launch in 2027. However, a hybrid option is planned to be introduced with Sonet in 2029. This hybrid powertrain is expected to generate 140 PS of combined power. Kia Seltos and Carens will also be getting hybrid options, helping expand the powertrain choices for consumers.
