With the use of advanced tech, BMW Vision CE aims to make the two-wheeler experience much safer and more enjoyable
BMW Motorrad has come up with exciting designs for its electric two-wheelers, as evident from products like the CE 02 and CE 04. An even bolder product idea is currently under development, based on the BMW Vision CE concept showcased last year. While an official launch timeline has not been announced, the BMW Vision CE self-balancing electric two-wheeler has been patented in India.
Self-balancing, 360° rider protection
BMW Vision CE is entirely self-balancing and does not even require a stand to remain upright when stationary. This makes the overall experience quite similar to a car, as riders do not have to put their feet down when starting or coming to a halt. The self-balancing function is likely powered by an advanced system comprising sensors and electric actuators.
While the scooter is self-balancing, a stand is still provided. This will apparently be used when the scooter is turned off and parked for long periods. During this time, the self-balancing system disengages to conserve battery and avoid component strain. The self-balancing system is likely automatically activated when the scooter is turned on again.
Safety of the rider is another focus area for BMW Vision CE. With this electric scooter, riders don’t need to use protective gear such as a helmet, gloves and specialized clothing. A tubular steel frame has been used at the front, which is designed to protect the rider’s feet and legs. Protective gear is not needed, since the scooter has a robust cage all around. Moreover, BMW Vision CE has a four point seatbelt, which secures the rider to their seat.
This will protect the rider in case of a crash or tip-over. Side elements have been engineered into the frame structure to protect the hip and shoulder areas. Adequate foam cushioning has been provided on the cage, backrest, handlebar and other parts to minimize potential injuries during an impact. Vision CE is likely to be equipped with rear-facing radar and driver-assistance electronics to detect potential collisions before they occur.
Performance, range
Specifications of BMW Vision CE have not been revealed. However, speculative reports opine that the self-balancing scooter could be derived from the platform used for CE 04. The latter uses an 8.5 kWh high voltage battery pack, allowing a range of 130 km. Powered by a permanent magnet liquid cooled synchronous motor, the CE 04 delivers 42 hp of max power and 62 Nm of peak torque. Top speed is electrically limited to 120 km/h.
With the additional safety equipment used with BMW Vision CE, the scooter could be heavier. That could impact its range and top speed. However, changes in the battery pack and the electric motor could help achieve the desired performance. While a design patent has been filed, there is no clarity on the launch dates. BMW Vision CE has been patented in other markets as well, although production plans have not been announced.
