New Hyundai Bayon

With its relatively compact footprint, advanced tech features and competitive pricing, Bayon can create its own unique space in the 4.2m – 4.5m SUV segment

Hyundai has launched the new Bayon in India, priced in the range of Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 17.99 lakh. While there are multiple giants in the midsize SUV segment, Bayon creates its own niche, backed by its advanced tech and safety features. It’s good to have some truly useful differentiators that can attract buyers, especially in a segment with more than a dozen rivals. Here’s a quick spec-sheet and pricing comparison between the new Bayon and its rivals to better understand the options available.

Bayon vs. rivals – Dimensions, specs

At 4,245 mm in length, Hyundai Bayon is the smallest in this group. However, rather than being a disadvantage, the compact profile could emerge as one of Bayon’s key USPs. Many SUVs in this space have grown in size over the years, which is where the Bayon stands out as a suitable middle ground between the sub-4m and midsize segments.

Seltos is the longest in this group at 4,460 mm. Hyryder and Victoris are also among the longest in this group, measuring 4,365 mm and 4,360 mm, respectively. While Bayon has a smaller length, it is the third best in the group in terms of its width (1,810 mm). Only Sierra and Seltos are wider, measuring 1,841 mm and 1,830 mm, respectively.

Bayon is 1,605 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. The smaller height is in line with the broader objective of creating a relatively compact profile. Tallest SUVs in this group include the Sierra (1,715 mm) and Aircross (1,665 mm). Sierra and Seltos are among the ones with the longest wheelbase at 2,730 mm and 2,690 mm, respectively.

New Hyundai Bayon

Bayon has 205 mm of ground clearance, which is quite good for this segment. Most SUVs have 200+ mm of ground clearance, with Honda Elevate leading the pack at 220 mm. While Bayon has relatively compact proportions, it is offering best-in-class boot space of 505 litres. Other options with good boot space include the Honda Elevate (458 litres) and Sierra (450 litres).

Bayon engine performance vs. rivals

Hyundai Bayon uses a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder MPi petrol engine, which generates 115 PS and 143.8 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and an Intelligent Variable Transmission, or iVT. This engine is the same as used with Creta and Seltos. The SUV with highest performance numbers in this list is the Renault Duster, which offers 163 PS and 280 Nm, mated to a wet dual clutch DCT.

While Bayon has an FWD setup, SUVs like Victoris, Grand Vitara and Hyryder have both FWD and AWD options. Bayon will be getting a CNG option next year. An innovative CNG setup is expected to be used, which will have minimal impact on boot space. Currently, only the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Hyryder offer CNG in this space. Also, there is no Hybrid powertrain in Bayon, which Duster, Grand Vitara, Hyryder and Victoris offer.

Bayon prices compared with rivals

In terms of its starting price, Hyundai Bayon is the most affordable at Rs 9.99 lakh. Bayon top variant, which gets exclusive features like AI assistant and ADAS Level 2 Pro with 23 functions, is priced at Rs 17.99 lakh. Among the top variants, Bayon is the most accessible, as it misses out on Turbo Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid and CNG (for now) powertrain options. Seltos is the costliest at Rs 21.82 lakh, followed by Sierra. While Creta top variant is priced at Rs 20.46 lakh.
