A new Jeep SUV reportedly based on Sierra’s ARGOS architecture is being developed with ICE and electric powertrains, with a potential debut in the first half of 2028

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Stellantis have signed a definitive agreement to expand their partnership into advanced technology and vehicle architecture. While the official announcement does not identify individual products, a new report links the agreement to a Tata Sierra-based Jeep SUV, internally codenamed J1J.

The development could give Jeep a new India-made product for domestic and overseas markets, while extending Tata’s role into supplying vehicle architecture to another global manufacturer. The agreement also includes Tata Passenger Electric Mobility and builds on the memorandum of understanding signed in February 2026.

What Tata And Stellantis Have Confirmed

Under the agreement, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles will give Stellantis access to its product technology and vehicle architectures. Stellantis will use its development and engineering capabilities in India to adapt these foundations for different customer needs, regulations and operating conditions.

Vehicles developed through this collaboration will be manufactured in India at Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited, the existing 50:50 joint venture between Tata and Stellantis. The announcement describes a programme addressing requirements across more than 50 global markets, without naming specific vehicles or their export destinations.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of TMPV, said the agreement extends the relationship into advanced vehicle technology and architecture. Stellantis Asia-Pacific COO Tianshu Xin highlighted the potential to develop competitive vehicles in India and expand exports.

Sierra-Based Jeep SUV In Development

The first product taking shape under this collaboration is a midsize Jeep SUV based on Tata Sierra’s ARGOS architecture. Codenamed internally as J1J, both internal combustion and electric versions are planned, likely using Sierra powertrains.

ARGOS stands for All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy and Geometry Scalable. Its modular approach allows different vehicle dimensions and powertrain applications, potentially giving Stellantis scope to develop further products around the architecture.

Production of the Jeep is planned at the Ranjangaon joint venture facility. Manufacturing operations are expected to be adapted over the next 18 months, while the first vehicle could launch in the first half of 2028. These product and timing details have not been disclosed in the official release.

Different Body And Cabin, 4×4 Likely

Sharing Sierra’s architecture would not mean simply changing badges. J1J will have a distinct body, exterior design and cabin, including changes to seating, features and equipment. The underlying architecture would be retained with modifications where needed for the Jeep body and overseas requirements. A 4×4 version is also considered.

A Pune-based team is working on the programme, including left-hand-drive adaptation. Tata Technologies is understood to be involved in engineering execution. Interestingly, this comes after the report on Tata Tech working on developing a new car platform for Honda Cars.

Platform Licensing And Export Opportunity

Tata will retain ownership of the architecture and license it to Stellantis. Shared components could draw on Sierra’s supplier base, while Jeep-specific parts would require separate sourcing and tooling. This could help Stellantis reduce development expenditure while allowing Tata to earn licensing revenue and spread architecture costs across more vehicles.

Car Sales Sep 2026 – YoY

New SUV Could Help Revive Jeep’s India Sales

The proposed SUV comes at a time when Jeep is struggling for volumes in India. September 2026 sales stood at just 252 units, down 16% from 300 units a year earlier. Its market share slipped to 0.06%, placing it last among the 14 manufacturers listed, even as overall car sales grew 20.91%.

A new SUV using Tata’s architecture and local supplier base could help Jeep improve cost competitiveness and attract more buyers. Planned ICE and electric versions would also broaden its offering, while exports could support higher production volumes. However, with a debut reportedly targeted for 2028, this represents a longer-term opportunity; pricing, product execution and after-sales support will be crucial to turning it into sustained sales growth.
