The new-gen Duster is an important model for Renault India, which has until now depended largely on the Kwid, Kiger and Triber. Now in its third generation, the Duster arrives with a thorough overhaul: new design, a longer features list and upgraded safety kit. It’s also among a few in this segment to be available with a strong-hybrid powertrain. But how well equipped is each variant and which one should you consider for your garage? Here’s a closer look.

*The hybrid uses a ‘multi-mode automatic’ gearbox.
The Renault Duster is currently on offer with three powertrain options: two turbo-petrol engines and a strong hybrid. The 1-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol motor makes 100hp and 160Nm and comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox only. Its larger 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine produces 163hp and 280Nm, and can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. While there’s no diesel option, the Duster gets a strong hybrid powertrain.
The Duster hybrid pairs a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery pack. The Atkinson-cycle engine makes 110hp and 175Nm, while a 50hp traction motor drives the front wheels and makes 208Nm on its own. Combined output stands at 160hp. There’s the so-called “multi-mode automatic” gearbox that features two electric gears and four petrol gears, with Renault claiming that this setup creates an 8-speed combination in hybrid mode. The Duster hybrid has an ARAI-certified mileage of 29kpl.

Which 2026 Renault Duster variant should you buy?
Given Renault’s aggressive pricing for the new-gen Duster, the fully loaded Iconic variant – priced between Rs 16.99 lakh and Rs 18.49 lakh – is our pick. It’s one of the few midsize SUVs that offers a manual gearbox with a turbo-petrol engine in the top spec, which will appeal to enthusiasts. Compared to chief rivals such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Tata Sierra, which offer a turbo-petrol engine paired to an automatic gearbox in their respective top trims, the Duster automatic undercuts them by up to Rs 2.5 lakh. Additionally, its 163hp motor is the most powerful in the segment.
Those wanting a mix of performance and fuel efficiency should consider the Duster hybrid, with the top-spec Emotion being our pick of the lot. It costs just Rs 50,000 more than the Techno, and for that, you get powered and ventilated front seats, a larger driver’s display and leatherette upholstery.
All prices are ex-showroom, India.
