ICE Vs EV Scooter Sales – Electric Grows Faster YoY

India’s total domestic scooter sales reached 9,95,576 units in September 2026, growing 34.07% over 7,42,602 units a year earlier. ICE scooter sales stood at 8,08,884 units, up 28.16% from 6,31,139 units. Electric scooters grew considerably faster at 67.49%, reaching 1,86,692 units. Consequently, EV share increased from approximately 15.01% in September 2025 to 18.75% in September 2026, a gain of around 3.74 percentage points.

ICE vs EV Scooter Sales Sep 2026

Petrol scooters nevertheless delivered the larger absolute increase. ICE volumes added 1,77,745 units year-on-year, compared with 75,229 units for electric scooters. EVs contributed approximately 30% of the domestic scooter market’s total annual volume gain.

Petrol Scooters Drive September’s Sequential Growth

The month-on-month comparison presents a different picture. ICE scooter sales rose 21.27% from 6,67,001 units in August, adding 1,41,883 units. Electric volumes declined by 2,022 units over the same period. As a result, EV share fell from 22.05% in August to 18.75% in September, even as overall domestic scooter sales increased 16.34%.

Electric scooters therefore continued to expand strongly against their year-ago base, supported by gains from established models and additional nameplates. September’s sequential growth, however, came entirely from petrol scooters, whose increase offset the modest decline in electric volumes.
