Based on the Acti.ev platform, Tata Kuno could be positioned as a more practical choice for family-oriented buyers
Tata Motors currently leads the electric passenger vehicle segment and has the widest range of EV models. However, there’s strong competition from rivals. For context, MG Windsor is currently the best-selling EV in the midsize segment.
As Tata dominates the sub-4m segment (thanks to Tiago EV, Punch EV and Nexon EV), establishing a similar position in the segment above becomes a natural aspiration. According to a new report, Tata has already started work on a new electric car (codenamed Kuno), which will directly rival MG Windsor EV.
Tata Kuno EV – What to expect?
Limited information is currently available about the upcoming Kuno EV. It is also not known what the vehicle’s final production name will be. As competition in this space could intensify in the near future, Tata may be looking to launch the Kuno as soon as possible. As per estimates, this new EV could be introduced in 2027-28.
In the company’s EV lineup, the upcoming Kuno will be positioned between the next-gen Nexon EV (codenamed Garud) and Sierra EV. Kuno EV is expected to be around 4.3 metres long, which is almost the same as the 4,295 mm length of Windsor EV. Nexon EV is 3,995 mm long, whereas Sierra EV is 4,340 mm in length.
Kuno EV will be built on the Acti.ev platform, which is already in use with Tata’s other electric cars. While specifications for Kuno are not available, it is known that this platform supports multiple powertrain options and body styles. Drivetrain configurations supported include FWD, RWD and AWD.
Acti.ev platform has several standout features such as its flat floor design and space-saving battery layout. These features will help ensure a spacious cabin for Kuno EV, which will be advantageous against rivals like Windsor EV. The latter is also preferred for its roomier and comfortable cabin, making it suitable for family use.
Performance, range
Details about Kuno’s battery pack and electric motor are not available at this point in time. However, it is expected that Kuno will aim to show better numbers than its primary rival. Windsor EV Pro variant uses a 52.9 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 449 km. The electric motor generates 136 PS and 200 Nm of torque. Windsor EV supports fast charging of up to 60 kW. 20% to 80% charge is achievable in 50 minutes.
Kuno EV could borrow its battery pack and motor options from either Curvv EV or Sierra EV. Curvv EV utilizes a 55 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 502 km. The electric motor generates 167 PS and 215 Nm. Sierra EV has battery pack options of 63 kWh and 75 kWh. Certified range is up to 535 km and 665 km, respectively.
Sierra EV is available in both RWD and AWD (QWD) configurations. RWD variants, equipped with a single motor, generate 209-238 PS (depending on the battery pack) and 315 Nm of torque. Dual-motor AWD variants of Sierra EV generate 349 PS of combined power and 504 Nm of torque.
Kuno EV production target
It is expected that Kuno EV will be manufactured at Tata’s Sanand plant in Gujarat. As per reports, Tata is likely aiming for a production capacity of around 80,000 to 1 lakh units per year. This indicates that Kuno EV will be looking to establish a strong presence in the midsize EV segment. Kuno EV will be offered at a competitive price point and may also get a BaaS option to effectively compete with MG Windsor EV.
